Helicopter Based Water Rescue Training

Sky Hook

.

TRT crews practiced simulated pickoffs during this rescue training. Members were placed on a raft that is designed to simulate a vehicle in a flooded wash, and then were "picked off" by members using the Phoenix Police helicopter and a device similar to what the Coast Guard uses to rescue swimmers.

The new device is attached to a rescuer who is deployed from the helicopter to the top of the submerged vehicle, then the device is placed over the rescuer's head and cinched up under their arms.  The rescuer then calls the helicopter in, and attaches the "sky hook" device to the rescue line on the helicopter, and then both the victim and rescuer are lifted off the vehicle at a safe height, and placed on stable ground.
