Phoenix firefighters celebrating the birth of a child. A healthy newborn boy was dropped off at Phoenix Fire Station Eight this morning under the state's Safe Haven law.

"Today the mom brought the baby to the fire station, no questions asked. In my opinion, she's a hero for doing that," says Phoenix Fire Assistant Chief Bob Khan. "This is a great event for all of us.

This is an especially rewarding day for Khan -- his adopted daughters were abandoned in China.

Kahn says the baby boy, who weighs about seven pounds, is fine. The baby was born about 6 a.m. and was dropped off about four hours later at the fire station at Tenth Street and Polk. The infant still had his umbilical cord attached.

Arizona has a Safe Haven law that allows mothers to leave their unwanted newborns at designated places, such as fire stations, without facing prosecution for abandonment.

Khan says happily, the mother in this situation did the right thing and the baby will eventually wind up in a loving home.
